About a mile north northeast of the White House in Washington, DC is a cool spot called Blagden Alley. That's where in 2010 I opened a gallery showing my mosaic work.
In 2012, to draw attention to the mosaics, we opened a little bar in the gallery. We serve waffles and smoothies—the only two things I know how to make.
But we know how to make them really well, and now people like the waffles (we churn our own butter!) more than the art. So there you have it.

The east and south sides of our building are open to vehicle traffic. Sometimes, vehicles traveling east go too fast, creating a dangerous situation.
Unaware of the danger, a mother or father pushing a baby stroller could round our corner just as a speeding car plows through.
We want to encourage drivers to slow down by putting a life-size mosaic on the wall opposite (home of the Downtown Boxing Club) depicting a family just stepping out into the alley. Isn't that a better "SLOW" sign than the typical heavy-handed sign threatening fines? (Thanks to landlords, Ken Welch and Pat Welch, and tenant, Dave White, for their support.)
The mosaic is currently under construction.
If you get here early enough, and the sun is shining, you can eat your waffle while watching Blagden Alley's very own helioglyphs slip down the wall of the Downtown Boxing Club before vanishing beneath the bricks.
According to an alley tradition that stretches back to April, lovers who kiss while our fresh-churned butter is still on their lips and the helioglyphs are still on the wall will find true love forever.
Waffles are now $450 each by appointment only.

- a fluffy 7" Belgian waffle with fresh-churned butter and real maple syrup
- a 4' x 4' mosaic similar to the one shown below (which was stolen—if you can believe it—by two black guys and a white guy at around 3 a.m. one Friday night/Saturday morning several months ago) of the subject matter of your choice*
- the materials with which to make the mosaic (roughly $225 at Home Depot)
